Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, 101 Years On

The old Triangle Shirtwaist Factory is now an NYU classroom building, and every year there is a small memorial for the young women who were killed there:

  1. Walked past Lotta's Fountain last night---on a nearly empty Market Street. For whatever reason, it nearly glowed, all of it, not just the lamp on top, calling to mind natural disaster and those who endured it. It is striking how these monuments recede into their surroundings and periodically call us to witness.

  2. Well said. What's interesting here is that the witnessing is done as much by OSHA and and the Dept of Labor because the greed and malice involved in this disaster were turning points in labor law -- not just a question of not being able to get one over on mother nature.
